Green Mountain College Vice President of Student Life Patrick Connelly announced several changes within the Athletic Department on August 9th. James Thivierge will serve as the Interim Director of Athletics while Chris George will be promoted to Director of Soccer Operations effective immediately.
“I am grateful to James and Chris for taking on these new roles and for leading our soccer program and the Athletic Department. James will be the partner I need as we move athletics forward and shares my commitment to excellence and student success. Both he and Chris will be the leaders our campus needs at this pivotal time so that we can, together, best serve the needs of our student-athletes.”
The administrative movements were necessitated due to former Director of Athletics Kip Shipley’s departure. Shipley, who also was the Head Women’s Soccer Coach, resigned this past week citing personal reasons.
“I am proud of the progress the Athletic Department was able to make over the course of my time at Green Mountain,” said Shipley. “I will continue to closely follow the success of the programs knowing that the department, as well as women’s soccer, will be well-served under the guidance of James and Chris.”
Thivierge has previous experience as the Interim Director of Athletics at Green Mountain, having guided the Athletic Department over several months to close out the 2015-16 academic year. He has served the department for seven years with three of those years coming as its Associate Athletic Director.
George assumes the key leadership role for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs after having worked this past year as both the men’s head coach and the women’s assistant coach. He is familiar with the role of director through his position as Director of the Girls Program at Queen City FC, initially a startup soccer club, which has grown into one of the premier soccer clubs in the state of Vermont under George’s influence.
