The Environment

The word "environment" has become politically charged, and it means very different things to different people. What we mean is, simply, our surroundings -- our natural and social communities. Students here learn to see themselves as members of many communities. They come to understand how they fit in this series of environments, and they learn why they have a responsibility for the health of their communities.

Green Mountain College is transforming the way we think about ourselves, enhancing our sense of responsibility for our environment, and, ultimately, helping to create a more sustainable society.
-- William Throop, Ph.D., Provost

At Green Mountain College, our curriculum is where it all begins: The natural and social environment is the organizing principle of the academic and residential experience. This is what we mean by an "environmental liberal arts" college.
