Dr. Tom Mauhs-Pugh
Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Tom Mauhs-Pugh serves as the chief academic affairs officer of Green Mountain College and supervises all aspects of the College’s academic programs and academic support services including the Office of the Registrar, Griswold Library, The Center for Careers, Advising and Teaching (CAT Center), IT (Information Technology), Cerridwen Farm and environmental initiatives. He is a member of the president’s cabinet, and provides leadership in planning and assessment in his areas of responsibility. The provost is the senior vice president of the College who serves as chief executive officer in the president’s absence. The provost also maintains external relationships with community leaders, other academic institutions and other organizations related to ongoing programs and special program initiatives such as the coordination of the Eco League program with Alaska Pacific University, College of the Atlantic, Dickinson College, Prescott College and Northland College.
Mauhs-Pugh holds a B.A. in English from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, an M.A.T. in English from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in history and philosophy of education, Syracuse University.
Mauhs-Pugh specializes in the history and philosophy of education. Trained in the cultural foundations of education at Syracuse University, he draws from a broad mix of social and political theory, analytical philosophy, and American history. His research emphasizes the history of educational policy within the context of an evolving, liberal, democratic society. Of particular interest is the central position education holds in developing and maintaining a civil society and the tension between the administrative requirements of managing an educational system and the goals of that system.
