Honors Program
Simply put, our mission is to promote academic excellence and intellectual rigor across the campus. Through the Honors Program, we seek to attract and retain academically motivated students to Green Mountain College and provide them with an enhanced learning experience. The Program is dedicated to building community among honors students, thus creating an inviting environment that promotes intellectual curiosity and the aggressive pursuit of knowledge.
Honors Requirements
Green Mountain College’s Honors Program is organized around our innovative Environmental Liberal Arts Program (ELA). ELA combines the skills and content of a strong liberal arts course of study with a focus on the environment. Every Green Mountain student takes four interdisciplinary courses, which comprise the core of the ELA curriculum. Honors students must register for the Honors section of the four environmental liberal arts core courses. The Honors sections of the ELA core courses are specially designed and taught for Honors students.
In addition, each freshman Honors student will be registered for the one-credit Honors Seminar. The Seminar allows Honors students to meet informally on a regular basis to discuss and debate important issues. The Honors Seminar introduces new students to a different theme each year, which is selected based on faculty and student research interests. Each upper-level honors student is required to participate in designing and running the Honors Seminar.
The Honors Certificate
Students who complete all requirements of the College Honor Program while maintaining an overall grade point average of 3.30 or higher, will be awarded an Honors Certificate recognizing their special academic achievement at Green Mountain College. In addition, both your College diploma and your official transcript will note your successful completion of work required for College Honors.
The Honors Society
All students admitted into the College Honors Program automatically receive membership in the College Honors Society. The Honors Society promotes and reinforces a standard of academic excellence for the entire campus community. The Honors Society also gives you opportunities to interact socially and on special projects with other students whose ability and initiative match your own.
How to Apply
Each year, prospective GMC students with a demonstrated history of outstanding academic achievement and ability are extended an invitation to apply to the Honors Program.
To apply for acceptance into the Honors Program, you must complete the Honors Program application and produce a short, 2-3 page essay explaining why you would like to participate in the Program. The Honors Committee reviews all applications and informs applicants about their decision.
If you are not initially invited to apply or accepted into the program, you can petition into the program after your first semester at Green Mountain College, provided you have a minimum grade point average of 3.30. The same applications procedure described above will be adhered to for those petitioning into the Honors Program.
