The Longest Lecture of Our Lives

The students and professors meet their Brazilian counterparts in the morning. After breaking the ice, journaling, and reflecting on what the rest of the week will bring, the students attend a lecture given by Professor Waverli. Over the course of the day, she discusses the Atlantic Rainforest, biodiversity issues, the ecology of the region, the history of development, the watershed surrounding São Paulo, and the politics of water in the region. The students also enjoy some exotic rainforest fruit and juice. Much information is absorbed, as would be expected in a ten hour lecture, and it is excellent preparation for the coming days in the field.
