Currently, 50% of the water in the PCJ remains untreated municipally, and 20% of the water remains untreated in industries. São Paulo city gets the water diverted from the Piracicaba River (the “good” water), and then it gets pumped back to Piracicaba once it has gone through the city (the “bad” water). This results in extreme pollution of the river, and tension in the community with people who want “their water” back. However, the diverted water supplies 9 million São Paulo residents. The situation is very complex; So many stakeholders, limited funds, and obscure regulation makes for quite a conundrum.
