Spring Travels
1930s
Betty Fox Kirkland ’39 – My son, Dale Kirkland, continues to play on Broadway in “Wicked.” He has been playing in the orchestra since the show opened five years ago.
1940s
Robert Darby ’41 – I miss my wife Alberta Napper. She died in 2003. I would like to hear from classmates from 1940–1942.
Cornelia Barnes Herzberg ’42 – I want to thank Steele and Terry Griswold for their article on Scott “Bill” Brainard’s obituary in the last Green Mountain Bulletin. As a 1942 G.M.J.C. classmate, a year behind Bill, I knew him as a fun loving, teasing, care free student and the happy boy from Hawaii. His achievements in the medical field could be attributed to his two years at G.M. Junior College and then on to the Medical College of Virginia. It’s great to hear about former alumni who have contribued so much to society, as Bill did. Thank you Steele and Terry for such an informative article.
Louis Pells ’43 – My wife and I joined 30 family members for a Mediteranean cruise last summer. Our son, Mark, hotel manager for Holland America Lines, proved to be a perfect host.
Charlotte Aldous Shaw ’43 – I’m still keeping busy, enjoying life and staying ahead of the funeral directors in Rochester, N.Y. I was sorry to miss my 65th reunion last year but have every intention of making the 70th down the road!
Karan Hampl Osenton ’43 – I am still enjoying traveling; with our trip to Alaska in ’08 we have now visited all our states with the exception of Hawaii which we hope to experience this year to celebrate our 60th Anniversary. We are expecting our third great-grandchild in August.
Eleanor Smith ’45 – Good news! President and Mrs. Fonteyn joined Karen Aparton ’75, Virginia Grigsby ’49 and me for a delightful reunion and luncheon in Los Altos, Calif. in February. Green Mountain is in good hands! Sad news: Thea Ladd Yon ’45 died in November ’08. She was my GM roommate and close friend for 63 years!

Dorothy Wheeler Grady ’45 – I hope everyone had a super Reunion. Wish I could have been there – only much younger!

Sylvia Barker: Aging Gracefully
What’s the key to aging gracefully? Sylvia Barker ’34 just turned 94 this spring, so she knows a thing or two about the subject. She recently gave a talk titled “Aging Gracefully” at The Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew in New York City. Sylvia worked as a registered nurse from 1936 to 1994 which required adherence to a strict schedule. Her chief advice: make a schedule for daily activities and stick to it. “Having a plan for your time is essential,” she said. Volunteering and keeping in touch with friends is also an important activity.
