In offering take-home lessons from his Pulitzer Prize-winning book Toms River: a Story of Science and Salvation, author Dan Fagin told a GMC audience that he believes stories like Toms River advance public awareness of environmental threats. “As part of the environmental beat, I feel like really good things are happening in terms of our ability to penetrate the larger culture. Environmental issues are on the rise–they are the compelling issues of our century and they are not going away. And the thing is, they are resolvable. It’s a question of whether we are willing to really grapple with issues like health effects of chemical waste,” he said. Fagan was the 2015 Thomas Benson Lecturer.
