Meet Mark Thiong’o ’12
Mark still remembers the day he learned he had received a scholarship to Green Mountain College. “It’s the day that changed my life,” said Mark, who graduated in 2012 with a double major in business and environmental management. “The scholarship allowed me to really concentrate on my studies and push hard to get to where I am now.”
After Mark completed his junior year, President Paul Fonteyn introduced him to Bob Charlebois, a College trustee and senior executive at Duke Energy. Bob hired Mark as an intern in the Duke Energy Rutland office, and Mark made the most of the opportunity. Mark was hired for a at the company’s corporate offices in Charlotte, N.C. and he was promoted to a position as a renewable energy systems analyst. In 2014, Mark was awarded a prestigious scholarship by the Swedish government to pursue his master’s in environmental management and policy at Lund University.

“I may not be able to donate a lot of money at this stage of my career, but I will always give something. Anything I can do to help someone else experience the same opportunities I received at GMC—that’s very important to me.”
