“The Triumph of Nature: Scientific Racism in America”, Jonathan Spiro

Tuesday, April 12, 2016 - 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Dr. Jonathan Spiro is the Dean of Humanities & Social Sciences at Castleton University. He earned his BA in French History from UCLA, his MA in American Studies from Pepperdine University, and his PhD in History from U.C. Berkeley. He has been at Castleton since 2002, where he has taught courses on politics, race, slavery, the conservation movement, the ancient Maya, and the nature-nurture debate. Dr. Spiro is recognized as one of the leading authorities on the eugenics movement; reviewers have stated that his book on the subject (Defending the Master Race) is a “brilliant,” “chilling,” and “near-miraculous feat of scholarship” that “should be mandatory reading for all Americans.” When not on campus, Spiro can be found at Superstar doing 360s. (Okay: 180s.) (Actually, he’s way too old to do tricks.)
