Peter Davis '08 Motivating the next generation With careful balance and agility, Peter Davis plants one foot firmly on the mat as the other foots screams forward in a ferocious kick. The GMC junior from Holland, New Jersey teaches cardio kickboxing to fellow students with a friendly and contagious intensity that has become his trademark on campus. While still in high school, Peter began teaching taekwondo to fellow students and discovered a new passion for helping others learn and grow. “The more I worked, the more I saw people change, and the more I wanted to keep doing it,” he says. Now double majoring in history and secondary education with a minor in psychology, Peter plans to eventually teach social studies at the high school level. Peter has increasingly sought out leadership opportunities on campus, and last semester was elected to the Student Senate. He says the position gives him the opportunity to promote a stronger relationship and understanding between the students and the administration. He is also a student leader in the Poultney Partners Mentoring Club, which involves planning out games and activities for the 9 through 12 year olds who visit campus each week. He is also active with the “DiverCity” Club, which he joined to help encourage acceptance and equality among all students. Just recently, he began assisting with Odyssey of the Mind students at the Poultney Elementary School, where he helps keep children motivated as they develop creative strategies for problem solving. As Peter considers a future as an educator, he is particularly interested in the 7-12 grade age group because he sees an increasing loss of interest and higher likeliness for students to fall behind during these critical years. It’s a challenge he wants to tackle head-on. “I really want to make a difference in my students’ lives,” he says. “I want to have conversations with them, to encourage them to continue working. I want to help keep them inspired.” Back to Front Page |
