A Passion for Teaching
The typical third grade student’s plans for the future involve what games to play at recess, but not for Missy Wapshare. At that young age, Missy, a junior from Buffalo, New York, had already chosen a career path. Through her work with her peers in the classroom and those she tutored at the after school program she attended, she realized that she had a valuable gift: teaching.

Missy’s current direction is elementary education, but a recent experience expanded her interest to a different student population. Over the summer, Missy tutored a handful of high school students in every imaginable subject, from math to Spanish. She enjoyed the experience so much that it created some confusion for her. “I’m still going to stick with elementary education for now,” she explained. “Though working with the high school students was quite rewarding, I think I’m needed more in the younger age group. I feel that kids need encouragement and a passion for learning ingrained in them at a young age so that these seeds can grow throughout their high school careers and even help them into college. Many teachers don’t have enough passion to produce these seeds in students, but I feel I do.”

Beyond teaching, Missy is also interested in coaching, as athletics has helped shape her life. Missy is a continuing member on the softball and basketball teams at GMC, as well as the secretary for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), a group of student athletes on campus who act as a liaison between the student-athlete population and the Athletic Advisory Board. The SAAC also hosts charity events. When the SAAC helped raise money for the Vermont Special Olympics last year, Missy went even further when she volunteered to work with a group of students from Rutland to help prepare them for the event. She also traveled to Burlington the day the games were held to root the kids on. “It was a great experience,” she said.

After graduating from GMC, Missy wants to attend graduate school, probably in or near her hometown. Her concentration, however, remains up in the air—she is considering continuing with elementary education, exploring her options in administration, or looking into secondary education. Regardless of what she ends up doing, Missy’s own educational experiences will certainly influence her interactions with students. Before coming to GMC, Missy attended primarily small private schools, and became so close to some of her teachers that they attended her going-away party and continue to communicate with her today. “My experiences have shown me that I’d really like to work at a small school, too, where I can get just as involved with the community and my students.”
