How Our Distance Learning Works

This program is designed to be manageable for busy professionals, though it is also well suited for students who wish to focus full-time on their studies. The normal time expected to complete this degree program is two years.

Basics of the Program
Students will be expected to purchase common textbooks and have access to common word processing, spreadsheet, and graphic presentation software. Other class materials from your professor will be accessible through a web site, so you will need reliable Internet access and web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. This web site is also where you and your classmates will post projects and be able to chat with one another. Email and telephone are the primary means by which you, your advisor, and your professors communicate with each other.

Courses
Courses run sequentially for six weeks at a time, allowing you to focus on a single subject for a short period. Options for independent study are also available.

Residency Programs
During the course of your program, you will complete two short residencies at our Poultney campus. This is a time for you to work with well known figures in Environmental Studies as well as GMC faculty and fellow students. Residencies will include workshops, seminars, and foundational courses that are continued through distance learning methods.

Student Support Services
Students in our distance learning graduate program will have access not only to some of the finest environmental studies faculty in the country, but also to GMC's Griswold Library, whose resources include more than 24,000 on-line book titles, robust electronic research tools including Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, JSTOR, Proquest Research Library, and Oxford Reference Online Premium, more than 1,000 current and back-filed periodicals, Interlibrary Loan services, and the 72,000-volume main collection (available to distance learners). Reference and research assistance from professional library staff is also available.
