Residency Sessions

We are very pleased to announce that Daniel B. Botkin, one of the preeminent ecologists of our time, will be the visiting scholar for the Fall 2008 Master of Science residency at Green Mountain College.

Daniel is a scientist who studies life from a planetary perspective, a biologist who has helped solve major environmental challenges, and a widely-read nature writer.

A professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 1979, Dan is currently Professor Emeritus, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology at UCSB. He is also president and founder of The Center for the Study of the Environment, a non-profit research and educational corporation.

Author of 12 books, Dan received the Fernow Award for Outstanding Contributions in International Forestry, given by American Forests and the German Forestry Association, and the Mitchell International Prize for Sustainable Development.

Well-known for his scientific contributions in ecology and the environment, Dan has also worked as a professional journalist and has degrees in physics, biology and literature. He discusses the role of scientists, businessmen, stakeholders, and government agencies, often using historical accounts by Lewis and Clark and Henry David Thoreau to discuss the character of nature and the relationship between people and nature.

It is our great pleasure to welcome Daniel Botkin to our community for the 2008 residency, which will run from September 10th to the 13th.

During the course of your graduate studies, you will participate in two brief on-campus residencies - one at the beginning of each academic year. The residencies will take place at our beautiful Poultney, Vermont, campus and be led by Green Mountain faculty along with a distinguished visiting scholar-in-residence.

The residencies provide an opportunity for you to work with well known figures in Environmental Studies as well as GMC faculty and fellow students. Residencies will include workshops, seminars, and foundational courses that are continued through distance learning methods.

The 2008 residency session will begin on Wednesday, September 10th, and runs through the morning of Saturday, September 13th. Students are expected to attend a full day of class on Saturday, September 13th. Events will include an official welcome to Green Mountain College, a reception and dinner with the Environmental Studies faculty, an introduction to on-line learning, a faculty panel on bioregional contexts for learning, field trips and instruction in the program’s inaugural course, and workshops and public presentations led by Daniel B. Botkin.
