Fall 2008 Orientation
Welcome to Green Mountain College!
Orientation will be held August 28, 2008 - September 1, 2008
Early Registration Days:
All incoming students are welcome to attend one of three Early Registration Days. During this time, students will be acquainted with the college, register for classes, meet professors and ask any questions they may have about Green Mountain College. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
Fall 2008 Orientation Schedule
*Please note: This schedule is subject to change at any time.
All first-year students and transfer students are required to attend all Orientation sessions. This includes athletes and other early arrivals.
Thursday, August 28
- 9:00am-4:00pm:
Check-In, Pollock Hall
Obtain welcome packets, photo ids, meal strips, parking permits, residence keys, help with computers, financial aid and billing and health forms. Representatives from Citizens Bank and Unicel will also be on-hand.
- 12 pm-1:30 pm:
Lunch, Withey Dining Hall
- 4 pm-6 pm:
Students' Advice on Letting Go
The Gorge
Parents, family and friends are welcome to join a panel of returning students who will share their thoughts about what parents can do to help students succeed during their first year at GMC.
*There will be optional tours of our natural campus areas
- 5 pm-6 pm:
BBQ, Cree Lawn
Students and their families are welcome to join us during this orientation weekend kick-off dinner. Vegan and vegetarian options will be available.
- 7 pm-8pm:
Floor Meetings, residence halls
These meetings will be an introduction to residence hall living and an opportunity for students to share their thoughts and feelings about their new community.
- 9 pm-10:15 pm:
SEX RULES!, The Gorge
Maria Falzone offers a funny and frank program that has her connecting with students on a very real and personal level, allowing her to lay down the rules for those who choose to have more enjoyable and safer sex.
Friday, August 29
- 8 am-8:45 am:
Breakfast, Withey Dining Hall
- 9 am-11 am:
Math Placement, meet in Withey Hall Lobby
Orientation leaders will meet with students who are required to take the math placement exam and take them to their designated locations at 9 a.m. or
10 am-12 pm: Fun on the Lawns! Lawn in front of Withey Hall
Join other students in games such as Frisbee, horseshoes, volleyball, croquet and badminton
- 12 pm-12:45pm:
Lunch, Withey Dining Hall
Students will meet with their Images professors and undergraduate teaching assistants or
Transfer Student Meeting, Bogue 009
The dean of the faculty will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding the upcoming academic year.
- 3 pm-4pm:
Academic Fair, Withey Hall
Take this opportunity to meet faculty from your major. Or, if you are an undecided major, talk with a professor about a major that you would like to learn more about. Faculty will be available to discuss their academic and professional opportunities, as well as Vermont life and what it is like to teach at GMC.
- 4pm-5pm:
Community Building, meet in front of Withey Hall
This team building session will help you meet new classmates and develop leadership and problem-solving skills
- 5 pm-7:30 pm:
Images Dinner
Dine with "Images" faculty at various locations. See your faculty advisor and UTA. Those transfer students who are exempt from Images will meet in the Withey Hall Lobby for a special dinner.
- 8 pm-10 pm:
Barefoot Truth, the Gorge
Young and roots-rock are the defining terms for Barefoot Truth. Their melodic songs are performed with a wide array of instruments including upright bass, lap steel guitar, stomp box, congas, didgeridoo and lead harmonica.
Saturday, August 30
- 8 am-8:45 am:
Breakfast, Withey Dining Hall
- 9 am-12 pm:
Inside GMC Sessions and Campus Resource Expo, various locations
During this time, students will travel with their "Images" sections. This is an opportunity for students to visit with departments on campus and learn about resources.
- 12 pm-1pm:
Lunch, Withey Dining Hall
- 1 pm-4 pm:
Inside GMC Sessions and Campus Resource Expo, various locations
- 4 pm-5 pm:
"Images" section meetings, section classrooms
Those students who are exempt from Images have this time free
- 5 pm-6 pm:
Dinner, Withey Dining Hall
- 6 pm-morning:
Camp Out Night, Contra Dance, and a Movie and Ice Cream Social
Students are invited to set up tents outside of Waldron Athletic Complex and enjoy a campfire for the evening (register at the check-in table). There will also be a contra dance in the East Room and a movie and ice cream social in the Gorge.
Sunday, August 31
Sustainable Sunday
Griswold Library is open from 9 am-5 pm
- 8:30 am-10 am:
Sustainable Workshop, Withey Dining Hall
A local breakfast will be served followed by sustainable focused workshops
- 11 am-12:30 pm:
Brunch, Withey Dining Hall
- 5 pm-6 pm:
Dinner, Withey Dining Hall
- 8 pm-10 pm:
Eclective Collective, The Gorge
"Remember 311? Remember the good parts of 311? Well, if you took all the good parts of 311 and added some soul-influenced vocals, at the drive-in-esque guitars, fusion-y keyboards, and a female vocalist that could put most pop singers to shame, you might be getting somewhere near what Eclectic Collective is. But you wouldn't be quite there yet."

Monday, September 1
Griswold Library is open from 9 am-5pm
- 8:30 am-12 pm:
President's Bike Tour, Meet in Ames Circle
Join President Paul Fonteyn for a scenic eight-mile bike ride to his house on Lake Bomoseen. Enjoy a swim and refreshments before returning to campus. Register at the check-in table. (Don't forget your bike helmet.)
- 9 am-2 pm:
Commuter Student Session, Pollock Hall
Prizes, snacks and refreshments! Commuter students are welcome to stop by Pollock Hall to take care of college business before classes start.
- 11 am-1 pm:
Brunch, Withey Dining Hall
- 4:30 pm-6:30 pm:
Dinner, Withey Dining Hall
- 7:30 pm-10 pm:
Club Night, The Gorge
An Evening of dance, food and fun!
