Green Mountain College is thrilled to invite you to join the next generation of students who will be partaking in the First Year Impressions (FYI!) pre- orientation program.
First Year Impressions (FYI!) is an innovative, fun, and adventurous program that gives new students the opportunity to take a fresh look at Poultney and the surrounding towns through unforgettable service-learning experiences. FYI! introduces students to the human and physical landscape beyond the college gates. Students will have the chance to meet their neighbors, learn about the region, and think about the many assets that make our community so special. No day will be the same!
New students, accompanied by a Program Coordinator and four upper-class leaders, will go on “road trips” to tour the town and Rutland Area, learning about the history, people, organizations, and involvement opportunities. Students will spend part of the day taking on a community service project with local organizations such as the Poultney Food Shelf, Young at Heart Senior Center, Poultney Historical Society, and local area businesses. Students will also get the opportunity to farm, engage in wellness and art activities, and spend some evenings in the homes of community members to prepare a meal together and hear their hosts’ stories of life in Poultney. By the end of the program, we are optimistic that students will continue to be involved in our community, explore the social and natural beauty of our region, and build friendship and collaborative partnerships with our neighbors and local organizations. We hope they will feel the tug of important work that awaits them as they become engaged in the community beyond the campus gates.
FYI! is also a great alternative to those incoming students who are not as passionate about camping, backpacking, or canoeing. We do expect, however, to spend some time in the outdoors for a night, but no camping equipment is required.
If you are interested in gaining a sense of place and purpose to begin your college experience, we recommend that you don’t miss your chance to register now for this program, as enrollment space is limited. There is a registration fee of $250.00 to cover expenses. Registration opens on May 15th.
