2013 FYI! Schedule
Join the first generation of incoming students who will be part of the GMC’s first First Year Impressions (FYI!) pre-orientation program.
First Year Impressions (FYI!) was designed to give new students a fresh look of Poultney
and the surrounding towns through unforgettable service-learning experiences. FYI! will introduce students to the human and physical landscape beyond the college gates. Students will have the chance to meet their neighbors, learn about the region, and think about the many assets that make our community so special. No day will be the same! (See program schedule)
New students, accompanied by a Program Coordinator and four upper-class leaders, will go on “road trips” to tour the town and Rutland Area, learning about the history, people, organizations, and involvement opportunities. Students will spend part of the day taking on a community service project with local organizations such as the Poultney Food Shelf, Young at Heart Senior Center, Poultney Historical Society, and Rutland’s Vermont Achievement Center
. Students will also get the opportunity to spend three evenings in the homes of community members to prepare a meal together and hear their hosts’ stories of life in Poultney. By the end of the program, we are optimistic that students will continue to be involved in our community, explore the social and natural beauty of our region, and build friendship and collaborative partnerships with our neighbors and local organizations. We hope they will feel the tug of important work that awaits them as they become engaged in the community beyond the campus gates.
FYI! is a great alternative to those incoming students who are not as passionate about camping, backpacking, or canoeing. We do expect to spend one night at Kehoe Camp on Lake Bomoseen
, but no camping equipment is required.
If you are interested in gaining a sense of place and purpose to begin your college experience, we recommend that you don’t miss your chance to register now for this program, as enrollment space is limited. There is a registration fee of $250.00 to cover expenses. Registration closes on August 15th.
