Letendre Publishes Opinion Piece on V2G Technology From the GMC Journal Week of December 7, 2009 An opinion piece from Prof. Steven Letendre (management & environmental studies) was published November 20 on EVWorld.com, an “Internet portal to the world of electric-drive vehicle technology.” Steve advocates for the inclusion of vehicle-to-grid technology in a report from the Electrification Coalition that “establishes a national goal to meet 75 percent of light duty vehicle miles traveled with electricity by 2040.” Steve states that the report “falls short in my opinion by discounting the key role that vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology could play in helping to meet the 2040 goal.” More on Steve Letendre...
Prof. Park Named Page Legacy Scholar From the GMC Journal Week of September 14, 2009 Prof. Jacob Park (business strategy and sustainability) has been appointed Page Legacy Scholar at the Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication at Penn State University for the 2009-2010 academic year. As part of his non-residential academic appointment, he receives a research grant to work on a discussion paper/book chapter on the various strategies used by private companies to engage and communicate with their stakeholders in terms of the climate change issue. Prado Leads Sustainable Business Workshop From the GMC Journal Week of September 7, 2009 Prof. Bill Prado (business) led a professional workshop in sustainable business education at the August 9 Academy of Management 2009 Annual Meeting in Chicago. The all-academy workshop - one of several that focused on this year's theme "Green Management Matters"- drew participants from around the world. The objective of the workshop was to support integration of sustainable business practices in business programs by understanding current teaching, curriculum, and organization challenges and opportunities. Letendre Quoted in New York Times Story From the GMC Journal Week of August 31, 2009 The July 22 edition of the New York Times quotes Prof. Steve Letendre (management & environmental studies) in a story about vehicle-to-grid technology. The story, by Annie Jia of ClimateWire, discusses how electric vehicles may feed into the electric grid to produce electricity and help to "answer one of the biggest climate-related question marks hovering over the grid's future: how to store renewable energy." Letendre, who has modeled the economics of vehicle to grid technology, discusses the benefits of allowing adjustments to energy generation through the storage capacity of electric cars. Purdom to Serve on State Water Panel From the GMC Journal Week of March 16, 2009 Prof. Rebecca Purdom (environmental studies, law and policy) has been appointed to the Vermont Water Resource Panel Science and Policy Advisory Committee. The Council will advise state lawmakers on the amendments to state water policy, including revision of the state's Anti-Degradation Policy and basin planning protocols. Prof. Letendre Featured on "Emerging Science" Television Series From the GMC Journal Week of February 23, 2009 Prof. Steve Letendre (management & environmental studies) was a featured expert in a recent episode of Emerging Science, a new series airing on Vermont Public Television that takes a close look at Vermonters at the frontiers of science. The February 17th episode investigated the challenges of continued dependence on gasoline vehicles in the face of climate change and declining oil reserves. Steve spoke about transportation alternatives including electric vehicles and an emerging concept known as “vehicle-to-grid,” then answered viewer questions in an Emerging Science chatroom while the program aired. Research in 2007 by Dr. Richard Watts, research director of the University of Vermont Transportation Center, and Letendre shows that the Vermont electricity grid can handle 50,000 plug-ins without any changes to the existing system. Rebecca Purdom Gives Lecture in Brazil From the GMC Journal Week of April 7, 2008 Prof. Rebecca Purdom (environmental studies) is serving as visiting professor of law at UNIMEP University in Piracicaba, Brazil. She is working with Prof. Paulo Alfanso Leme Machado, known in Brazil as the "father of Brazilian environmental law," on a book about constitutional law and the environment. She recently gave the keynote address at "Deasfio Ambiental/Ribeirao Quiombo: Bacia Hidrografica e Contexto Regional" [Environmental Defense/Quilombo River: Hidrograic Basins in Regional Context] in Americanas, Sao Paulo. Her address, titled "The Public Participation in the Legal Management of Natural Resources and Freshwater System - The International Vision," marked the launch of the first freshwater ecosystem restoration effort under Brazil's new water management scheme. Jacob Park Receives Grant from Commission for Environmental Cooperation From the GMC Journal Week of April 2, 2007 Prof. Jacob Park (Business & Public Policy) received a $10,000 research grant from the Montreal-based Commission for Environmental Cooperation to work on a paper examining the environmental impacts of economic and business trends in the food retail/service industry. At the fourth North American Symposium on Assessing the Environmental Effects of Trade in the spring/summer of 2008, Jacob will deliver a paper presentation outlining the direct, upstream, and downstream environmental impacts of the food retail/services industry. Steven Letendre Op-Ed. Published in Christian Science Monitor From the GMC Journal Week of Feb. 12, 2007 Prof. Steven Letendre (Management and Environmental Studies) co-authored an op-ed column that appears in the February 12 issue of the Christian Science Monitor. The article discusses the need for public utilities and auto manufacturers to collaborate in order to build the success of a plug-in hybrid car technology that can reduce the nation's dependence on oil. Letendre is one of a team of researchers who have been exploring the feasibility of plug-in hybrids (Vehicle to Grid Technology) for several years. Steven Fesmire Delivers Talk in Unity College Inspired Speaker Series From the GMC Journal Week of Feb. 12, 2007 Prof. Steven Fesmire (philosophy & environmental studies) traveled to Unity, Maine on January 24 to give the keynote address for Unity College's Inspired Speaker Series. To a backdrop of photographs of GMC’s Cerridwen Farm and sustainable dining initiative, Fesmire spoke on the topic of “Ecological Imagination.” He defined this as our capacity to perceive, in light of possibilities, the relationships that constitute any focus. “We cannot respond to what we do not perceive,” he observed. He urged cultivation of ecological imagination to respond to (a) the global scene of human impact on the natural environment, and (b) our novocain-like disconnection from the mosaic of natural and social relationships in which we dwell.
