The natural sciences, which include a major in biology and minors in several fields, are successful through a focus on interdisciplinary studies and the natural issues of Vermont and the Poultney region. Students studying in the fields of biology, chemistry and geology gain an understanding of their area of study through field experience in the many diverse habitats within a short driving distance, whether they be at the Poultney river studying water quality, examining the geology of the Slate Valley, or the plant life of the Adirondack Mountains.
Students have opportunities to study outside Vermont, too, in various block courses like the recent trips to Hawaii and Brazil, and the Adirondacks block course which offered students an in-depth, 15-credit, interdisciplinary look at the bioregion of the nearby Adirondack Mountains. Combined with the college's strong Environmental Studies and Recreation and Outdoor Studies departments, the natural sciences at Green Mountain College offer a well-rounded, localized education not found at many other institutions.
