Author Bruce Piasecki to Speak at Green Mountain College
POULTNEY--The earth will soon be home to seven billion people, all seeking to share the same water, air, food, and products. While this presents major challenges to business – and to society in general – it also offers unique opportunities to organizations that recognize and capitalize on them, says Dr. Bruce Piasecki, president and founder of AHC Group. Dr. Piasecki, author of the new book Doing More with Less: The New Way to Wealth (Wiley; March 2012) will present a public talk at Green Mountain College Monday, March 19 at 7 p.m.
Piasecki’s new book is based on 30 years of experience working with companies throughout the world, and offers a ground-breaking approach to thinking about and doing business in this new era. “The businesses that survive this challenging new millennium will be the ones that find new and lasting ways to answer key social questions about poverty, mobility, and energy now,” he writes.
Central to this effort is what he calls “the art of competitive frugality.” This means returning to the core values of industriousness and frugality that the great statesman, inventor, and author Benjamin Franklin wrote about so eloquently two centuries ago.
“We must resist the temptation to use technology for technology’s sake, and instead focus on the creative solutions scarcity demands,” says Piasecki.
Piasecki believes that rediscovering the vital link between frugality and competition will usher in a golden age of higher efficiencies and smarter competition, with implications for such diverse subjects as the passage of health care reform, sustainable agriculture and the development of mega-cities around the world.
Fundamentally, Piasecki’s approach demands a return to basic principles: achieving greater balance by realigning frugality and prosperity.

In 2009 Dr. Piasecki was a Green Mountain College Voices for Sustainability lecture series speaker and scholar in residence for GMC’s Sustainable MBA program. Founded in 1834, Green Mountain College is a private, four-year liberal arts institution with 700 students that takes the environment as a unifying theme across the curriculum. Green Mountain College received the Second Nature Climate Leadership Award last July and was named the second “greenest” college in the United States by Sierra magazine in 2011. GMC is only the second college in the nation to reach climate neutrality, and the first to do it through efficiency, adoption of clean energy, and purchase of quantifiable local carbon offsets.
