Dianne Dillon-Ridgley is Speaker for Green Mountain College’s 176th Commencement

POULTNEY--Green Mountain College’s 2013 commencement speaker is Ms. Dianne Dillon-Ridgley, a national and international leader in environmental sustainability, corporate responsibility and social justice. She will address GMC graduates at the College’s 176th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. Dillon-Ridgley will also receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from GMC. Graduates of GMC’s sustainable MBA and masters of science in environmental studies programs will also receive degrees.

Dianne Dillon-Ridgley is the chair and a trustee for CIEL (Center for International Environmental Law) and has served as the U.N. Headquarters representative for the Center for International Environmental Law since 2005. She is the founding chair-emeritus of Plains Justice, an environmental law center and organization that promotes a sustainable economy through community partnerships across the Great Plains states. She currently serves as a director of the Women’s Network for a Sustainable Future.

In 1994 Dillon-Ridgley was appointed by President Clinton to the President's Council on Sustainable Development, and served as co-chair of the Council's International and Population/Consumption Task Forces until the Council's dissolution in June 1999. Dillon-Ridgley was appointed by the White House to the U.S. delegation for the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, for the United Nations General Assembly Special Session in New York in June 1997 (known as UNGASS-’97), and World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002 in South Africa, making her the only person to serve on all three U.S. delegations. She was chair of the 2000 Millennium NGO-DPI Summit for the UN, and in 1999 she was appointed to the Oxford University Commission on Sustainable Consumption in the UK.

Since 1997 Dillon-Ridgley has served as a director at Interface, Inc., a global manufacturer of environmentally-responsible modular carpet and an industry leader in sustainable design. In the energy sector, she was a director at Green Mountain Energy, a leading retailer of renewably produced electricity. She also chaired the company's environmental integrity committee.

A sought-after spokesperson, Dillon-Ridgley has appeared on ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, the Today Show, PBS and numerous local news programs in the U.S. and around the world.

The outdoor ceremony on the Griswold Library lawn is open to the public (in the case of inclement weather, ticketing is required for the indoor venue, Waldron Gymnasium).
