GMC Theater Presents “The Madwoman of Chaillot”
POULTNEY--The Green Mountain College theater program will present the play “The Madwoman of Chaillot on November 10-12, in Ackley Theater. The play is directed by GMC professor Paula Mann. Showtime is 7 p.m. each evening. Admission is free for GMC students and $10 for the general public.
The show features twenty Green Mountain College student actors and professional actress Melissa Hurst who plays the lead role of the Madwoman.
This poetic satire was written by Jean Giradoux in 1943. The story is set in the Café de L’Alma in the Chaillot district of Paris. The story pits the evil forces of corporate executives who want to destroy Paris by prospecting for oil against the poor idealists of the French café life. Although written in 1943, this play is a poetic fantasy which takes place in Paris; but could easily be translated to our current Occupy Wall Street movement.
The play was performed as a musical on Broadway in 1948 and in 1969. The 1948-50 production was praised by the New York Drama Critics’s Circle as "one of the most interesting and rewarding plays to have been written within the last twenty years,” and having "an enveloping and irresistible humor."
