Green Mountain College Partners with Zipcar to Offer New Transportation Option
Program provides a convenient, cost effective alternative to owning a car that supports the college's environmental initiative
POULTNEY, VT - Today Green Mountain College launched a new partnership with Zipcar Inc., providing the campus with access to the world's leading car-sharing service. The cost-effective and convenient transportation option is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all students, faculty, staff and community members, ages 18 and older. Zipcar is an environmentally friendly transportation alternative that supports the College's environmental mission - each Zipcar takes 15 to 20 privately owned vehicles off the road.
Gas, 180 miles per day, insurance, reserved parking spots and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for up to four days. Rates on all GMC vehicles start as low as $8 per hour and $66 per day (24 hours).
The annual membership fee for anyone affiliated with GMC is $35 and GMC applicants receive $35 worth of free driving credit that applies towards their first month of driving. The annual fee is $50 for Poultney residents. (Poultney residents will also receive a $50 driving credit when they sign up for the service). GMC students, faculty and staff can join at www.zipcar.com/greenmtn.
"A significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions at Green Mountain College is related to transportation - according to the College's latest greenhouse gas inventory, travel accounted for 18% of emissions," Kevin Coburn, director of communications at Green Mountain College. "Participating in the Zipcar program will help minimize the environmental impact of travel for faculty, staff and students and help the college reach its ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2011."
Cars are self service; they can be easily reserved and accessed 24 hours a day. GMC Zipcars will be located in convenient spaces in high demand areas. Two vehicles will be located behind the Withey Student Center on GMC's campus. Zipcar even offers a fun and functional iPhone app that will honk the horn to locate a Zipcar and unlock the doors for members.
"In addition to the green benefits that the GMC community will receive, they will also experience a more convenient and economical transportation option," said Matthew Malloy, vice president of global university operations at Zipcar. "Zipcar will allow individuals to attend meetings, run errands and get away for the weekend without the hassles and costs associated with owning a car."
Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 200 universities including Middlebury College, Vermont Law School, Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire. Zipcar utilizes a network of local vendors to service and clean its fleet.
