Electric and hybrid vehicles cut down on C02 emissions and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. A group of researchers, including GMC professor Steven Letendre (economics and environmental studies), also see these cars as valuable contributors to the power grid. Vehicles spend most of the time in the garage or parking lots. Why not use their batteries to let electricity flow from the car to power lines and back?
The concept of “vehicle-to-grid” (V2G) allows cars to become integrated with the power grid providing any number of reliability services from backing-up renewable forms of power to providing emergency power during outages. Steven is working with researchers to demonstrate V2G systems in New York City with funding from New York State.
“It is exciting to see V2G emerge from the pure research phase to demonstrations,” says Steven. “Major automobile manufacturers and power companies are beginning to take a serious look at this exciting opportunity.”
