Steeped in Arts and Culture
Here at GMC, we like to express ourselves. No, scratch that – we need to express ourselves. We discover new talents, we hone those talents into skills and we share those skills with our community. We recognize this journey in ourselves and in our peers, and we honor it with community-wide support.
We also open our community to some amazing human beings in the arts world and beyond; renowned speakers who give phenomenal presentations, shake us to our core and collaborate in workshops with students. Our professors are also our heroes, leading the way when we get stuck, fostering our creative spirit and providing inspiration at every turn.
The Visual Arts
Green Mountain boasts two fantastic art galleries, providing beautiful exhibition spaces for our arts students, enjoyed by the entire student body during our frequent artist receptions. Who doesn’t love an art opening?
The Feick Arts Center serves as the focal point for the arts on campus. Originally a carriage shed barn, The Feick has been renovated into a climate and light-controlled exhibit space, serving as the main campus gallery. This gallery provides visiting artists and Green Mountain College students an opportunity to display their work; in fact, every GMC student graduating from the B.F.A. program has a solo show at the Feick or the neighboring Surdam Art Gallery. Apart from our beautiful campus and the winding river that surrounds us, Surdam is our artists’ home away from home, with multiple artist studios and all the implements and materials you’ll need for your next project.
Music & Performing Arts
On this campus, you can’t go far without hearing the twang of guitar strings or the steady rhythm of the West African drum. Find your niche in an acoustic jam under a tree or at an open mic in the Coffee House; belt our college anthem and traditional Welsh tunes with the College Choir; trumpet your heart out with the College and Community Concert Band, or jazz it up with the GMC Jazz Band. Private lessons are available each year for those who wish to develop their skills under the guidance of mentors, be they professors or peers.
Meanwhile, our beautiful Ackley Auditorium is the thespian’s playground, drawing laughs and tears from engaged audiences. The theater program invites students to audition for two mainstage productions annually in addition to frequent student-directed or produced shows.
Seriously Awesome Concerts and More
The College Programming Board is a student-led group that coordinates social and cultural programs at GMC. Membership is open to any students who would like to help review and select performers and events. Traditional events include the spring concert, weekend movies, hypnotists, musicians and comedians.
