Fast Facts

Green Mountain College is a coeducational, private, four-year liberal arts college founded in 1834. We take the environment as a unifying theme underlying the College's academic and co-curricular programs. GMC is a tight-knit campus community of 800 students, most of whom live on campus. Average class size is about 15 students. Students come from 33 states and 19 countries.

Curriculum
Green Mountain College offers bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, and bachelor of science degrees in 22 different majors. Twenty-seven minors are available. All students participate in the College's signature Environmental Liberal Arts (ELA) program. Students also may earn certificates in sustainable community development, resort management or adventure recreation.

Location
Poultney is a quintessential New England village located in the heart of the southern Vermont lake district. Our 155-acre main campus is right in the middle of some of the best outdoor recreation in the east. Three major urban hubs, New York, Boston, and Montreal, are within a few hours' drive.

Campus Life
About 90% of undergraduates live on campus. Students live in either single or double rooms and several residence halls offer special-interest floors. Over 30 clubs, interscholastic and club sports, and a lively roster of entertainment provide an active student life on campus.

Academic Rigor
Green Mountain College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Faculty members are veteran teachers trained at some of the best colleges and universities in the world. According to 2008 data from the 2008 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), students at GMC regard their professors as role models, mentors, and guides for continuous, life-long learning. Students also say they feel intensively involved in their education at GMC. They collaborate with each other in solving problems, and grapple with real-world issues in preparation for the complex challenges they will encounter in daily life after college. Our student body is also highly engaged, especially in service to the community.

Environmental Initiatives
Green Mountain College is nationally recognized as a leader in integrating environmental sustainability across the curriculum. In 2007, GMC won the Campus Sustainability Leadership Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The award recognizes Green Mountain for outstanding commitment to sustainability in their governance and administration, curriculum and research, operations, campus culture, and community outreach. GMC is the first campus in the country to get more than half of its electricity from “Cow Power,” a renewable energy program provided by the local utility company, which generates electricity from Vermont dairy farm manure. Check out some of our other environmental initiatives and awards.

Athletics
GMC competes in NCAA Division III. The athletic department boasts seven men's teams and seven women's teams, including basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Club sports include men and women's rugby and Ultimate Frisbee.

After GMC
We focus on one-on-one interaction with faculty, so students leave Green Mountain College with recommendations from professors who know their students' strengths and care about their post-graduate success. Our Career Services Office offers on-campus recruiter meetings, online job and internship search support, career fairs, alumni networking, and one-on-one career counseling. GMC graduates across many disciplines get relevant jobs right out of college or are accepted to top-tier graduate programs.

Graduate Programs
Green Mountain College offers two master's degrees: A master of science in environmental studies and a master of business administration (MBA). Both programs are offered through a web-based distance learning model that allows students to live at home and carry on a full-time professional career while working toward their degrees.
